NJ I-Bank Water Infrastructure News (WIN): Lower Township MUA receives $11,177,599 in Water Bank loans saving ratepayers approximately $2,343,207.

Lower Township MUA (“LTMUA”) recently completed drinking water improvements that are being financed with approximately $11 million in loans from the NJ Water Bank, a low-rate funding program jointly administered by the DEP and the NJ I-Bank. Including interest cost savings, total savings for this project is estimated to be $2,343,207 over the 30-year term of the loan or 21% of the total project cost. In addition, this project created an estimated 140 direct construction jobs.

The Del Haven project extended water mains to extend the Lower Township MUA system to parts of southwestern Middle Township. Previously, properties in this area had relied on shallow wells that were approximately 40 years old, for their drinking water needs. The project replaced these wells which showed signs of saltwater contamination, posing health risks. Water mains were installed under paved roads to minimize environmental impact while also ensuring sufficient water supply and pressure for homes. The project accommodated 854 new residential services and 97 fire hydrants for reliable fire department access.

“Middle Township and the LTMUA worked to improve the quality of life for the Del Haven area residents,” said Jacqueline Henderson, LTMUA Board Chair, “By working together to construct the new water distribution system, the residents now receive better water quality, pressures and fire protection. The strategic decision to finance the project through the Water Bank saved our ratepayers money in the long run.”
